Background
As a fisheries research scientist and Program Leader, Phil Roni has conducted research on salmon life history, effects of hydropower operations on salmonids, fish sampling techniques, effects of forestry activities on aquatic biota, identification of essential habitats for sensitive aquatic species, and, most recently, watershed restoration. Prior to arriving at NOAA in 1995, he worked as a marine and fisheries biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and as a research biologist at an environmental consulting company. Phil has a B.A. in Business (University of Washington 1987), a M.S. in Fisheries Science (University of Washington 1992), and a Ph.D. in Fisheries Science (University of Washington 2000).
Current Research
Phil's current research focuses on watershed restoration and evaluating various habitat rehabilitation techniques such as instream structures, nutrient additions, floodplain restoration, and recovery of urban streams. In addition, he is involved in writing regional, national and international documents on planning, monitoring, and evaluating watershed restoration for fisheries resources.
