The Healthy Vision Community Awards Program is intended to stimulate collaborative community health education initiatives. The National Eye Institute (NEI) recognizes the importance of strengthening the capacity of community-based organizations by providing "seed money" to begin or continue vision-related health education projects. NEI provides leadership to promote health and prevent disease among Americans through management and coordination of the implementation of the vision objectives in Healthy People 2010, the framework for prevention for the Nation. These awards provide NEI with opportunities to establish partnerships that extend the reach and effectiveness of its work. Winners for the 2008 awards will be announced in January 2008.
The Healthy Vision Community Programs Database is a searchable collection of
vision health programs from the different U.S.
states and territories containing information about effective community-level
approaches to eye health. This database is designed to address the following
objectives: document the impact of appropriate promotion on eye health; provide
information about effective approaches that can be used to educate health
professionals and lay persons about vision health; and promote networking of
groups and individuals concerned about vision health.
May is Healthy Vision Month, a national eye health observance devoted to promoting the vision objectives in Healthy People 2010. Healthy Vision Month is sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and the National Eye Health Education Program Partnership. The NEI is part of the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
This contest, conducted in 2002, encouraged children between the ages of 6 and 12 to develop posters about why it is important to take care of our eyes. The National Eye Institute (NEI) received more than 500 contest entries from more than 52 Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) chapters.
