Accessibility Program

There are more than 53 million individuals with disabilities in this country, and each year, increasing numbers of these individuals join our workforce, visit our facilities, and participate in our programs, activities and services.  The Department of the Interior is proud that most of its programs, facilities and activities are accessible to people with disabilities and continues to be pro-active in its efforts to provide equal access.

DOI provides equal employment opportunity for individuals with disabilitiesDOI provides equal employment opportunity for individuals with disabilities who are Federal employees or applicants for Federal employment and currently employs 650 workers with disabilities -- about one percent of the Department's workforce.

The DOI Accessible Technology Center, located in the Main Interior Building, Washington, DC, supports employees with disabilities by determining the appropriate assistive technology and ergonomic solutions for the individual. These accommodations are a surprisingly affordable way to enable employees with a disability to equal access to information technology that is essential in today's work place. Seventy percent of accessible technology accommodations cost less than $500 each.

Closed circuit television, Braille terminals, and speech-to-text and text-to-speech computer adaptations are among the technologies highlighted by the center and available for demonstration.  Accessibility accommodations, including those for vision, speech and hearing, mobility and cognitive impairments, are featured with descriptions of available technologies and vendor lists.
