Financial Management Internships

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is continuously looking for high-caliber undergraduate and graduate students to gain invaluable work experience through our Financial Management Internship Program. A Financial Management Internship is an ideal platform for students from Accounting, Policy, Business Management, and other related fields to kick-start their future careers.

OCC's Financial Management Division offers a range of competitive internships, offering students opportunities that are tailored to their own professional development and educational needs. However, all positions share the following characteristics, which are vital to a rewarding internship experience:

  • Employees will work with interns to provide them with valuable hands-on training in the field of Financial Management;
  • Interns are financially compensated for their hard work; and

Background:

These internship position possibilities are within the Financial Management Division ("FM"), which is responsible for performing the financial support functions of the agency.

FM's mission is to provide leadership to promote the efficient management of OCC's resources and assets, quality financial services to customers based on their needs, and complete, useful financial information on OCC operations that fully supports financial performance reporting.

Qualifications and Requirements:

The OCC is looking for capable and self-motivated students who are comfortable shouldering significant professional responsibility. Qualified applicants must have a strong academic record, possess professional written and oral communication skills, and be able to work a minimum of 18 hours a week while enrolled in school. These internships possibilities are only available at our headquarters location in Washington DC.

In addition to a strong academic record, candidates for this position should possess a sincere interest in the field of Financial Management. Applicants must also possess functional knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, and Excel. Experience with MS Visio and Microsoft Project are preferred but not required.

Potential Internships:

Below is a list of the potential internship opportunities within Financial Management. Each is accompanied by a description of the duties which are common to each position.

    1. AcquisitionsManagement Internship
    • Research acquisition guidance and assist in the drafting of new internal procurement policies.
    • Construct and maintain spreadsheets to track budget allocations.
    • Maintain the MS Project Plans to track improvement initiatives throughout the division.
    • Assist in the "close-out" process of open contracts.
    2. Internal Controls Internship
    • Documenting and flowcharting processes in the areas of general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and financial reports preparation.
    • Finalizing draft documents into a predetermined format.
    • Interviewing people who process transactions and documenting the processes based on the interviews.
    • Reviewing, planning, and implementing new OMB policy guidance for federal agencies that is similar to Sarbanes Oxley Act guidance for publicly traded corporations (OMB Circular A-123, Management's Responsibility for Internal Controls).
    3. Policy Internship
    • Performing requested research, editing documents, and incorporating edits from a number of people into policy documents that have been routed for comment.
    • Providing interpretations of existing policies to agency employees.
    • Providing administrative support for policy development and updates.
    • Participating in meetings with major stakeholders involved in several internal administrative policy updates; and
    4. Records Management Internship
    • Participate in record audits and evaluations.
    • Perform statistical analysis on RM Metrics.
    • Use electronic management systems to organize and track electronic records.
    • Research and understand Federal RM regulations and guidance.
    • Assist with the transition of the OCC's RM procedures resulting from an office space move.
    5. Planning & Budget Internship
    • Aid budget analysts in tracking funding of each division at the OCC.
    • Aid budget analysts in creating new budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
    6. Financial Systems Internship
    • Daily maintenance and monitoring of OCC's core financial and procurement systems.
    • Assist with General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Account Receivable financial system issues.
    • Assisting with system and report validation efforts.
    • Participating in the assessment of OCC's Financial Systems.
    • Assisting with testing of new system enhancements.
    • Developing functional guidelines and policies and procedures for financial systems.
    7. Accounting Internship
    • Processing deposits from customers and payments to vendors.
    • Creating and reconciling accounting entries in the general ledger.
    • Testing new software relating to processing receipts and payments.
    • Documenting new processes and procedures.
    • Communicating with both external and internal customers.
    8. Deputy CFO's Front-Office Internship
    • Aid in developing and tracking metrics for all of Financial Management.
    • Analyzing performance data for FM and comparing them to established benchmarks.
    • Drafting analytical memoranda for the Deputy CFO for distribution to FM and other stakeholders.
    • Providing assistance on special research, analysis, and drafting projects, as identified by the Deputy CFO.

    Duties & Responsibilities common to all FM Internships:

    • Participation in the OCC's "Quick Win" process streamlining program.
    • Enrollment in Lean Six Sigma process improvement training.
    • Testing and analysis of key business processes to ensure the effectiveness of internal controls.
    • Attending monthly career development meetings with the Deputy CFO.

Generally, Financial Management Internships are indefinite in duration. As such, we hire on an immediate needs basis. Depending on which area of Financial Management we have opportunities in at any given time, the specific activities preformed will vary.
