About the Commission

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was established as an independent agency in 1975. The NRC is headed by five Commissioners who are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 5-year terms. The President designates one Commissioner to be the Chairman. NRC’s mission is to ensure adequate protection of the public health and safety, the common defense and security, and the environment in the use of nuclear materials and facilities in the United States. The NRC's responsibilities include regulation of commercial nuclear power reactors; nonpower research, test, and training reactors; fuel cycle facilities; medical, academic, and industrial uses of nuclear materials; and the transport, storage, and disposal of nuclear materials and waste.

Attorneys in the Office of General Counsel advise the Commission and the agency technical staff in the development and implementation of the regulatory program and represent the agency in administrative licensing and enforcement proceedings and on judicial review before United States Courts of Appeal. Agency attorneys also counsel and represent the agency on other administrative law, personnel, labor relations, procurement, and information law matters.

Internship Opportunities

The Office of General Counsel plans to sponsor three or four internships during the summer 2008. Internships during the school year may also be arranged.

Law student interns will be assigned to work with attorneys in the Office of General Counsel who advise the Commission and the agency technical staff in the development and implementation of the regulatory program and who represent the agency in administrative licensing and enforcement proceedings and on judicial review before United States Courts of Appeal. NRC attorneys also counsel and represent the agency on other administrative law, personnel, labor relations, procurement, and information law matters. Interns can expect to receive research and writing assignments related to these matters and can also expect to participate in discussions and meetings with our attorneys and client offices in the agency and to observe the workings of the agency in carrying out its regulatory responsibilities. Interns may also assist with updating of the NRC’s Practice and Procedure Digest, a guide to administrative litigation used by agency attorneys and other practitioners.

Positions are paid at the GG-07/Step 10 for students who have completed one year of law school and at the GG-09/Step 9 level after two years. Externships for credit can be arranged.
