NOAA's Aquarius,
the world's only undersea laboratory, is the focus of the most recent
issue of Current - the Journal of Marine Education . Current
is a publication of the National Marine Educators Association.
In this issue of Current, articles are presented about NOAA's
Aquarius, coral reefs, and a partnership program between NOAA
and NASA. Additionally, standards-based lesson plans that tie directly
to the research being carried out at NOAA's Aquarius are
presented. The lesson plans had their beginning during a weekend-long
workshop in Key Largo almost two years ago where scientists, educators,
and graduate students came together to develop an approach for effectively
communicating the science of NOAA's Aquarius to students,
educators, and the general public.
The guest editors of this Issue of Current were Dr. Steven Miller,
Director of NOAA's National Undersea Research Program Center at
the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Paula Keener-Chavis,
the National Education Coordinator for NOAA's Office of Ocean Exploration.
NOAA's Aquarius is owned by NOAA and operated by the NURP Center
at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
