The National Institute of Undersea Science and Technology
(NIUST), a partnership between NOAA's Undersea Research Program,
the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern
Mississippi since 2001, is focused on national and global research
issues, and specifically on developing new products from the sea
and new technologies for exploring the ocean's harsh and extreme
environments.
NIUST is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. J. Robert Woolsey,
Director of NIUST's Seabed Technology Research Center, to the Methane
Hydrate Advisory Committee. The appointment was made by the Secretary
of Energy. The Methane Hydrate Advisory Committee develops recommendations
and priorities on methane hydrate research with a primary focus
on the use of hydrates and associated free gas as a potential energy
source and the effect of hydrates on global climate.
Dr. Woolsey is a great addition to this advisory panel. In addition
to Dr. Woolsey's participation, Barbara Moore, Director of NOAA's
Undersea Research Program, serves as the Department of Commerce
representative to the Interagency Coordination Committee on Methane
Hydrates Research and Development as undersea research is a critical
component of the hydrate research and development program.
