NIUST awarded NR-1 time
This story entered on 23rd Jan, 2007 12:53:19 PM PST

The US Navy has selected the NOAA/NURP supported National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology (NIUST) to participate in a 10-day science cruise on the nuclear research submarine NR-1. The research involves participants from NIUST’s Seabed Technology Research Center (University of Mississippi) and Undersea Vehicle Technology Center (University of Southern Mississippi). The mid-March cruise will concentrate on the Gulf of Mexico Hydrates Research Consortium’s Seafloor Observatory site in the northern Gulf of Mexico; approximately 100 miles off the Mississippi coast (Mississippi Canyon block 118). The submarine will be used for bathymetric and side scan surveys and a geochemical survey using an underwater mass spectrometer to detect gas emissions such as methane. Other proposed operations include cable laying at the observatory and the deployment or recovery of instrument arrays at the site.
