Volunteering Internationally

The American people have a long tradition of extending a hand to those in need,including our neighborsoverseas. International volunteer service is anextension ofour Nation’s compassion andshow ofgoodwill. Indeed, in this time of great challenge, the USA Freedom Corps is dedicated to making it easier for more Americans to volunteer internationally. As the President says, the true strength of our nation is not in our military might, but in the hearts and souls of our people.


Peace Corps

Established in 1961, the Peace Corps engages men and women 18 years and older to serve for two year assignments in countries overseas and help communities solve important challenges in the developing world. To date, more than 170,000 individuals have served in 136 countries as Peace Corps volunteers, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and awareness, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture.

Volunteers for Prosperity 

In September 2003, President Bush signed Executive Order 13312 establishing Volunteers for Prosperity (VfP), a call to service by highly skilled Americans to serve as volunteers overseas for flexible, short-term assignments to help achieve U.S. global health and prosperity objectives. Such objectives include providing clean water, promoting democratic governance, developing economic freedom, promoting free and open markets and stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS.
