The site is open year around, hours change during the summer beginning Memorial Day until Labor Day, 8:00am to 8:00pm daily, winter hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm, CDT.

Access to site
Fort Union Trading Post sits on the Montana/North Dakota border, 25 miles southwest of Williston ND and 25 miles north of Sidney MT. The fort sits on the North Dakota side where the main parking lot is 1/4 mile on the Montana side. There is a slight climb in elevation when coming from the smaller parking lot which is about 500 feet from the fort.

Park grounds are mostly accessible to wheel chairs, but there are some stairs. A ramp to the Bourgeois House Visitor Center will be installed on request and parking lot shuttle service is available for visitors who have difficulty walking. Please have a member of your party contact the ranger at the Visitor Center desk. Video program includes closed captions and narration. A hands-on exhibit of animal pelts is available.

Seasonal precautions
The weather on the Northern Plains can change very rapidly, please be aware of current weather before coming out to the site. Summer days can be very hot so plan on bringing plenty of water and sun screen if you need it, there is also water available at the visitor center.

Mosquitos are also a seasonal problem, They are very active from mid-June to early August. Be sure and bring bug repellent and protect yourself according.
Dining and camping

There are no consessions on site, during special events limited consessions are available only.

There is no camping available on site. Fort Buford State Historical Site, which is 2 miles east of Fort Union has primitive camping available.

Cooperating association store with books and reproduction trade goods, restrooms, water fountain, beverage and snack vending.

Did You Know?
Sleeping Bear Dunes includes two large islands in Lake Michigan - North and South Manitou Islands. Take a day trip to South Manitou Island and explore the island village and lighthouse or take a motor tour of the farming district. If you go to North Manitou Island, plan to camp overnight!
