In the Spotlight !

November 2006-

The National Geophysical Data Center has released a new website for their Tsunami Inundation Gridding Project which supports the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). NGDC is developing high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for select U.S. coastal regions as part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis), currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers. The DEMs are being compiled with the best available digital data from government agencies, academia, and the private sector and will increase the accuracy with which NOAA can forecast inundation due to tsunami, storm surge, and rainfall flooding in coastal areas.
