Visitors may access the Gulf of Mexico by using beach crossovers.

All visitor centers, pavilions, and auditoriums are wheelchair accessible.

FLORIDA DISTRICT. Fort Barrancas Visitor Center reopened in April 2008 with new accessible museum exhibits. Exhibits and the new film are audio described. Tactile exhibits include a small scale replica of Fort Barrancas and the Water Battery. An orientation film is available at the Naval Live Oaks. Because the Fort Pickens Road is currently closed, access to the Fort Pickens Area is available through alternative transportation including water taxis and a land shuttle. Fort Pickens Fishing pier is accessible.  Beach wheelchairs are available at Johnson Beach at the Perdido Key Area in Florida, Fort Pickens Area, and Naval Live Oaks. The Perdido Key Discovery Trail and six beach cross-over boardwalks (two to sound; four to Gulf) are wheelchair accessible.

Access is limited to historic Fort Pickens, Fort Barrancas, and the Advanced Redoubt. New accessible museum exhibits, orientation films, and outdoor waysides will be installed at the Naval Live Oaks Museum in Spring 2009.   

Mississippi District. On West Ship Island in Mississippi the lower level of Fort Massachusttes is accessible.  A beach wheelchair at West Ship Island is available during tour boat season from March through October.  New accessible exhibits and outdoor waysides are planned for the Davis Bayou Visitor Center for 2010. Boardwalk trails, campsites and fishing pier are accessible. For information please call 228-230-4100.

Did You Know?
Because of the tropical-like conditions, the U. S. Army established the Cat Island War Dog Training Camp in south Mississippi during World War II. A variety of dog breeds were trained to guard, deliver messages, and attack the enemy. Cat Island is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
