Of the original 13 American colonies, six were above Pennsylvania and six were below. Pennsylvania’s strength held the colonies together like “keystone” of an arch.

Meaning: Penn’s Woods
Pennsylvania was named after Admiral William Penn’s father.

Historical Facts:

  • The Declaration of Independence and Constitution were both written in Philadelphia.
  • York, Pennsylvania was the first capital of the United States.
  • Betsy Ross made the first contemporary American flag in Philadelphia.
