FLETC Hosted the Eighth Annual Two-Way Sport Fishing Club’s Special Olympics Fishing Rodeo

Glynco, GA May 10, 2007

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) hosted the Eighth Annual Two-Way Sport Fishing Club’s Special Olympics Fishing Rodeo on the Glynco Center on May 10. This is the fourth year FLETC has hosted the event on center.

Approximately 200 participants from the Glynn County School System and the Morning Star Baptist Treatment Center enjoyed a day of fishing, softball, horseback riding, bounce castles, face painting and, of course, great food. The day ended with an awards ceremony. Each participant was a winner and received a medal as well as a reel and rod.

Second only to the awards ceremony was the “Big Catch” of the day. Young Brandon Lupi caught a 30-pound carp. With the help of volunteer Wendell Harper, Brandon landed the monster fish. After Mr. Harper wrestled the carp to the shore, the children were given a chance to see this marvel up close. Brandon then watched on as Mr. Harper safely released the fish back in the pond for another day.

More than 25 volunteers from FLETC and the partner organizations, plus another 25 from Two-Way Sport Fishing Club assisted during the daylong event. The volunteers stated that this was the most rewarding event for them. “It provides an opportunity to give back to the community. Just seeing the participants’ faces light up when they catch a fish, makes it all worthwhile,” commented Carl Alexander, member of Two Way Sport Fishing Club.

“The volunteers’ assistance and dedication to this event and many other community functions show that the FLETC staff is always willing to help out and give of themselves. The facilities make a safe environment for the kids to a day of fun. Many have never touched a fish or ridden a horse. I would like to thank Director Patrick and the Executive Staff for allowing this event to be hosted at the FLETC,” said event coordinator and DMD Senior Instructor Mike Evans.

The Two-Way Sport Fishing Club raises money through fishing tournaments throughout the year for this event and other community events.
