The National Labor Relations Board's online self-service, automated Q&A system is provided for the convenience of users to get immediate answers to frequently asked questions about the NLRB's casehandling processes, the National Labor Relations Act, and the rights of employees, employers, and unions pursuant to the Act. It is in no way intended to substitute for the professional services of legal counsel.

In its statutory assignment, the NLRB conducts elections to determine whether or not employees want union representation and investigates and remedies unfair labor practices by employers and unions. The agency does not act on its own motion and processes only those charges of unfair labor practices and petitions for elections that are filed with the NLRB in one of its Regional, Subregional, or Resident Offices. The automated Q&A system is not meant to be a substitute for investigation of an unfair labor practice or union representation matter.

A determination of whether or not there has been a violation of the National Labor Relations Act can only be made after a complete and thorough investigation of all the facts. No complaint shall issue based upon any unfair labor practice occurring more than six months prior to the filing of the charge and service of the charge.
