Each year we publish an updated "List of codes" in the Federal Register.  The "List of codes" contains the list of HCPCS and CPT codes for four of the designated health services to which the physician self-referral prohibition applies and is published as an addendum to the annual final rule concerning physician fee schedule payment policies.  That rule is usually published in November of each year and generally becomes effective January 1 of the following year.  In addition, we may publish other rules or correction notices that may change the list of codes. We post any changes to the list of codes on this webpage as soon as possible after publication in the Federal Register.

The designated health service categories included in the list of codes are:  clinical laboratory services; physical therapy services (including speech-language pathology services); occupational therapy services; radiology and certain other imaging services; and radiation therapy services and supplies.  (Note:  The list of codes does not include codes for the following designated health services categories: durable medical equipment and supplies; parenteral and enteral nutrients, equipment and supplies; prosthetics, orthotics, and prosthetic devices and supplies; home health services; outpatient prescription drugs; and inpatient and outpatient hospital services.  For information regarding DHS that are not defined by codes, refer to §411.351.)
