Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni's press conference call comments
September 29, 2004
“Science advances very quickly. New technologies emerge, as well
as new ideas, in terms of questions that we could address today that
we couldn’t in the past. There is a need for us to encourage high
risk, high impact research: There is a need for a Pioneer Award.
This is different from an innovator award. Pioneers, in our sense, are
individuals who truly are exploring uncharted territory. It is a bit
like Lewis and Clark going through territory that was unopened. Then
you — following those pioneers — have others who come in and
have as much innovation as the pioneers, but “settle the land,” if
you will. . So, this Pioneer Award is a first in a series of different
approaches the agency wants to take to identify leading edge scientists
who have the potential for pioneering breakthroughs, and this is what
we are announcing today.”
