  • AMERICANS SHOW SUSTAINED COMMITMENT TO VOLUNTEER SERVICE.  Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps Desiree T. Sayle welcomed a new study showing that an increased number of Americans participated in volunteer service in the past year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported this week that the number of volunteers rose from September 2003 to September 2004. About 64.5 million people participated in volunteer work at least once during the study period, up from 63.8 million for the similar period ended in September 2003, and up from 58.8 million for the period ended September 2002, the first year of the study….

  • CEO OF CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE CALLS ON BUSINESS, HIGHER EDUCATION, AND CONGRESS TO HELP SPUR VOLUNTEER SERVICE IN AMERICA.  After announcing findings of a new study on the positive benefits of AmeriCorps service on members’ civic attitudes and behaviors, David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service called on business, higher education, and Congress to take further actions to demonstrate their support for national service, volunteerism, and civic engagement in America. Eisner, whose federal agency administers the Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, addressed a luncheon gathering at the National Press Club….

  • PRESIDENT BUSH RECOGNIZES NEW MEXICO TEEN FOR DEDICATION TO VOLUNTEER SERVICE.  President George W. Bush met Jade Wright when he arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday, November 1, 2004. Wright, 17, is an active volunteer and mentor at the Albuquerque Mountainside YMCA. Wright serves on the Teen Leadership Council at the YMCA and organizes and participates in volunteer opportunities for YMCA youth….
