  • PEACE CORPS SUSPENDS PROGRAM IN HAITI.  Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez announced the immediate suspension of the Peace Corps program in Haiti on February 21. “The safety and security of the volunteer is the number one priority of the Peace Corps and in light of the current conditions in Haiti, suspension of the program is a necessary action,” said Vasquez. Currently, all 76 Peace Corps volunteers have safely left the country....

  • KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL KICKS OFF NATIONAL GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP Millions of volunteers will make a clean sweep of communities nationwide this spring during Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup. The nation’s largest annual community improvement program will kick off March 1 in Times Square with a multi-media tribute to Keep America Beautiful. For the second consecutive year, President George W. Bush is serving as Honorary Chair of the Great American Cleanup. Volunteers nationwide are encouraged to join local community improvement activities happening from March through May....

  • VOLUNTEERS IN POLICE SERVICE.  As part of the Citizen Corps initiative under the USA Freedom Corps, Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) assists citizens in supporting the efforts of their state and local law enforcement agencies to protect communities from crime and terrorism. Recently, the VIPS database of law enforcement volunteer programs was expanded to include over 760 programs, representing a 1000 percent increase since the inception of the program in May of 2002.
