USA Freedom Corps - The President's Call to Service - Weekly Update

"In a responsibility society, each of us is responsible for loving our neighbor just like we'd like to be loved ourselves. And we see the culture of service and responsibility growing around us. You know I started -- right after September the 11th I started what's called the USA Freedom Corps. It's a chance for people to find out ways to extend a compassionate hand to a neighbor in need. And the response has been strong, really strong."

  • GRANTS TO SUPPORT SERVICE PROJECTS ON MARTIN LUTHER KING HOLIDAY.  Tens of thousands of Americans across the country are expected to turn out January 19 to honor the life and vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in service projects in their community. The Corporation for National and Community Service has announced grants to support nearly 100 nonprofit organizations and public agencies nationwide as part of the Corporation's annual effort to transform the holiday in honor of the slain civil rights leader into a national day of service....

  • INTEREST IN OVERSEAS SERVICE, PEACE CORPS ON THE RISE.  This past year, the Peace Corps continued to see increases in website visitors and online applications, a trend that has been in place since President George W. Bush announced plans to increase the number of Peace Corps volunteers in his January 2002 State of the Union Address. In 2003, approximately 5.7 million people visited the Peace Corps website, a 32 percent increase over the previous year....
