  • VOLUNTEERS RESPOND TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES.  As devastating fires have swept across Southern California this past week, the outpouring of giving and volunteering has come in many forms -- volunteer firefighters have saved their neighbors homes, ham radio operators have assisted in emergency communication efforts, and donations have continued to pour in from corporations and individuals. From helping evacuate families and preparing meals for firefighters, to collecting donations and caring for children who can’t return to their homes, hundreds of AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers are responding....

  • HHS ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $8 MILLION IN MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS GRANTS.  On October 30, 2003, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced 167 Medical Reserve Corps grants totaling over $8 million. These grants help community-based organizations develop local volunteer medical emergency and public health response capabilities. Medical Reserve Corps is a component of Citizen Corps, which was launched in January 2002 as part of President Bush's USA Freedom Corps….

  • NATIONAL SERVICE AGENCY ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO SUPPORT 300 AMERICORPS MEMBERS MEETING NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH. 
    The Corporation for National and Community Service announced the renewal of 29 grants totaling $3.7 million to support AmeriCorps members who are helping to meet the needs of children and youth across the nation. The grants will support the work of 311 full-time AmeriCorps members who work with national and local organizations to build the character and competence of our nation's youth….

Wheat is an active volunteer with Gilda’s Club of North Texas. Gilda’s Club is a nonprofit organization that was created to help anyone with cancer - free of charge….
