  • CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE CEO VIEWS FLORIDA HURRICANE RESPONSE AND ANNOUNCES TWO DISASTER PREPAREDNESS GRANTSAfter getting a first-hand look at hurricane damaged areas of Florida this week, Corporation for National and Community Service CEO David Eisner announced two new grants to help the state mobilize volunteers in response to future emergencies and disasters. Both grants are for Volunteer Florida, the state commission on service and volunteering, which also has been designated by Florida Governor Jeb Bush to coordinate the activities of volunteers and donations during times of disaster. More than 600 national service program volunteers have been deployed to provide both direct services and leverage the support of thousands of additional volunteers….

  • MISS AMERICA CONTESTANTS RECEIVE PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDAt a recent White House reception, 51 Miss America contestants were presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their dedication to service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award was created by President George W. Bush and is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize and encourage sustained volunteer service, and to make volunteering a central part of the lives of all Americans. To date, more than 80,000 of America’s volunteers have received the Award….

  • CITIZEN CORPS ASSISTS FEMA WITH HURRICANE FRANCES RECOVERY EFFORTS.  Before Hurricane Frances hit Florida, Citizen Corps was collaborating with FEMA to recruit Community Relations field officers as part of the massive response effort. Citizen Corps sent a nationwide alert to state and local Citizen Corps Councils, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Medical Reserve Corps Units, Volunteers In Police Service programs, and Citizen Corps affiliates to support the emergency responders and Florida’s local communities. Nearly 2,000 Citizen Corps representatives from 47 states and the District of Columbia will help disaster victims understand the application process for state and federal disaster assistance and identify the needs of Florida’s communities….

Bush met Roy Boso when he arrived in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on Sunday, September 5, 2004.  Boso, 75, is a charter member and active volunteer with the Lubeck Volunteer Fire Department, which was established in 1960….
