  • AMERICORPS MEMBERS HELP WITH HURRICANE CHARLEY RECOVERY EFFORTS. Twenty-seven Corps Members and Team Leaders from the AmeriCorps*National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Central Region have joined Hurricane Charley recovery efforts with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These NCCC members are working with 13 members from the NCCC campus in Perry Point, Md., AmeriCorps state workers in Florida, FEMA, and the Army Corps of Engineers to help Floridians stricken by this disaster. The total number of AmeriCorps members supporting Hurricane Charley response is now more than 160….

  • NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER. 
    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Education have joined a coalition of more than 50 national organizations to engage Americans in emergency preparedness by launching National Preparedness Month on September 9. National Preparedness Month will provide Americans with a variety of opportunities to learn more about ways they can prepare for an emergency, get an emergency supply kit, establish a family communications plan, and become better aware of threats that may impact communities.   • PRESIDENT BUSH RECOGNIZES CINCINNATI GIRL FOR DEDICATION TO VOLUNTEER SERVICE. President George W. Bush met Alexandra Amend when he arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Monday, August 16, 2004. Amend, 10, has helped raise nearly $5,000 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund by giving patriotic violin concerts on street corners in downtown Cincinnati….
