Background
Ian received a B.A. in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College. He studied sockeye salmon population dynamics at the University of Washington's school of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, receiving his M.S. in 2001. He completed his Ph.D. examining the effects of stock structure assumptions on assessment model output and performance in 2006, studying with Dr. Ray Hilborn at the University of Washington. Ian began working for the NWFSC as an intern through the National Sea Grant/NMFS joint graduate fellowship in population dynamics and is now a research fisheries biologist with the assessment team. He has contributed to recent stock assessments for canary rockfish, English sole, Pacific hake and Pacific ocean perch.
Current Research
Ian is currently working on a variety of topics in support of the 2007 stock assessment process. Research areas include weighting of data sources, assumptions in the use of age and ageing error information, Bayesian modeling of discarding, as well as incorporation of environmental indicators into stock assessments. Upcoming assessments will include canary rockfish and an updated assessment for English sole.
