Background
Gene Matthews has worked for the NWFSC as a research fishery biologist since 1973. Over the years, his research has focused primarily on salmon passage problems associated with Columbia and Snake river hydroelectric dams and reservoirs. He has conducted research involved with evaluating smolt transportation around dams; survival and condition of smolts passing through turbines, spillways, bypass systems and reservoirs; stress and disease in salmon smolts; and life-history characteristics of wild salmon smolts. Gene has also served as the lead biologist for the initial NOAA Fisheries Endangered Species Act status reviews on wild Snake River spring/summer chinook salmon and wild Columbia River summer/fall chinook salmon. Gene received a B.S. degree in wildlife biology from Washington State University.
Current Research
Gene currently serves as a team leader within FE's Riverine Survival Program. His research activities include evaluating smolt transportation using contemporary methodologies, examining life-history characters of wild salmon smolts, and evaluating post-hydropower system extra or delayed mortality.
