Background
Tom Wainwright is a quantitative ecologist with interests in populations and ecosystem dynamics. He has led risk assessments for many populations of Pacific salmon as part of Endangered Species Act (ESA) status reviews. Before joining NOAA Fisheries in 1992, Tom worked in academic research (crustacean ecology, forest ecology, and population dynamics) and private consulting (plant and animal endangered species assessments). He has a B.S. in biology from Stanford University, an M.S. in plant ecology from the University of California at Davis and a Ph.D. in fishery science from the University of Washington.
Current Research
Tom's activities focus on two areas: salmon ecology research and salmon recovery planning. He is researching the roles of ocean production and predation for determining survival of juvenile salmon in the coastal waters of California, Oregon, and Washington. As part of a broader NOAA/National Science Foundation effort studying the California Current, Tom is developing a model of food-web dynamics that will provide a means for testing hypotheses about the connection of climate variation to salmon production. Tom's recovery planning work focuses on assessing risks facing West Coast salmonids. He is co-chair of the Southern Oregon/Northern California Technical Recovery Team, which is developing recovery goals for ESA-listed salmon in that region.
