Background
Sarah is a field ecologist whose research interests are based in the discipline of biological assessment (using biota to evaluate the condition of a place and define the causes of degradation). Within this broad framework, she has conducted research on topics ranging from shorebird foraging in restored wetlands of the San Francisco Bay Estuary to the effects of agricultural run-off on invertebrate communities in headwater streams of Costa Rica. More recently, her graduate work at the University of Washington combined biological assessment with a GIS-based analysis of land cover to examine the relationships between stream health and urbanization in the Puget Sound lowlands. Sarah holds a B.A. degree in environmental science (University of California, Berkeley 1994), and an M.S. in aquatic and fisheries sciences (University of Washington 2000).
Current Research
Sarah's current research projects include evaluating habitat restoration opportunities within the Duwamish River Estuary and examining the effects of proposed dam removal on primary and secondary productivity in the Elwha River Basin. Sarah's research interests also include: development of biological monitoring tools, urban ecology, and incorporation of environmental education and volunteer involvement in ecological field studies.
