Background
Dick Ledgerwood started working for NOAA Fisheries in 1977. Prior to that, he did fish culture research with the U.S. Peace Corps in El Salvador. His studies have included migration behavior and survival of juvenile salmonids, limnology research and fish guidance studies at Columbia River dams. Dick has also documented survival of juvenile salmonids through the second powerhouse at Bonneville Dam, evaluated the effectiveness of predators on juvenile salmon released at Bonneville Hatchery, assessed the potential impacts of proposed reservoir drawdown of Lower Granite and John Day reservoirs and observed the seaward migration of individual juvenile salmonids implanted with sonic tags and released from the Youngs Bay Terminal Fishery Project in the Columbia River estuary. He earned a B.A. in biology from Linfield College and an M.A. in fisheries from the University of Washington.
Current Research
Dick evaluates migrational timing and survival of PIT-tagged juvenile salmonids from the Snake River Transportation Study to the Columbia River estuary. His research includes the development and deployment of a mobile, underwater electronic PIT-tag detector fitted to a pair trawl.
