Background
Bich-Thuy has been a Research Chemist in the Marine-Biotoxin Analytical Team since 1999. In 1983, she joined the Biochemistry group to work on the effects of contaminants in marine environment. Her work has primarily focused on the development and validation of methods, i.e. biomarkers for determining the effects of contaminant (polycyclic aromatic compounds [PACs] and chlorinated hydrocarbons) exposure in bottom-dwelling fish and salmon. Recent projects include development of methods for measuring domoic acid, PSP toxins and DNA molecular probes. Bich-Thuy holds a Bachelor of Science (1975) and a Master of Science (1978) in Chemistry from the University of Akron in Ohio.

Current Research
Current research is focused on the development of an Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure domoic acid in shellfish and whole sea water. Bich-Thuy also collaborates on a variety of projects related to the development of methods for detection of shellfish toxins (amnesic, paralytic, neurotoxic, etc.) including training Quileute tribal personels in laboratory techniques for determining domoic acid levels in shellfish.
