Background
Laurie holds three degrees from the University of Washington: a B.S. in Zoology (1985), a M.S. in Fisheries (1991) and, most recently, a Ph.D. in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (2004). Her masters work dealt largely with sand flat ecology and disturbance cycles, while her dissertation worked examined the marine ecology of Chinook and coho salmon in Southeast Alaska. She has been a Research Fisheries Biologist at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries since 1992, moving to the Newport Field Station in 2004. Lauries initial responsibilities at the Center focused on estuarine and nearshore studies in Puget Sound, but switched to the scientific basis for Endangered Species Act listings beginning in 1994, when she was assigned to lead of the West Coast coho salmon status review. Laurie is a member of the Pacific Salmon Commissions Joint Coho Technical Committee, NMFS Oregon workgroup of the Northern California/Oregon coho Technical Recovery Team, and the Yakama Nation’s Mid Columbia Coho Reintroduction Workgroup.
Current Research
Laurie’s primary research interests concern the estuarine and marine ecology of Pacific salmon, and the factors that affect their survival. Other interests include the bioenergetics of introduced salmon populations, factors effecting salmon during the estuarine-marine transition, and Pacific salmon life history diversity.
