Background
Jennifer Hempelmann earned her bachelors degree in zoology from the University of Washington. Her scientific background includes the population genetics of Puget Sound rockfish (Sebastes emphaeus). She joined the NWFSC Conservation Biology Division in October 2004.
Current Research
As a research molecular geneticist, Jennifer is collaborating with the FRAM division to investigate non-lethal DNA sampling techniques for use in mark/recapture studies. Her current project involves bocaccio and vermilion rockfish in Southern California. The project makes use of specially designed fish hooks to obtain tissue samples of deep water groundfish without bringing the fish to the surface or damaging the fish. Jennifer carries out the genetic analyses of the tissue samples which include species identification and microsatellite genotyping.
In addition to rockfish genetics, Jennifer is working with Brad Hanson of the Marine Mammal program to investigate the use of non-invasive genetic sampling techniques on marine mammals. Using this approach, they study the diet and collect genetic information from Southern Resident killer whales.
