Background
Thomas began his experience in fisheries shortly after receiving his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1982, when he worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal. Upon returning to the U.S. Thomas entered graduate studies and received his M.S. in fisheries biology from Auburn University in 1987 and Ph.D. in oceanography from Louisiana State University in 1992. His thesis focused on the ecology of northern Gulf of Mexico fishes and his dissertation concern the mathematical modeling of the population dynamics of spotted seatrout. After graduate studies, Thomas has worked in fish population dynamics and stock assessment with NOAA Fisheries both at NEFSC in Woods Hole and NWFSC in Seattle.
Current Research
Thomas' interests focus on the response of marine fish population to exploitation and other environmental forcing. He is currently working on the population dynamics of Pacific hake and on statistical methods for analyzing multi-vessel research survey data.
