West Coast groundfish trawl survey underway
 Posted: June 2, 2008

The Center's FRAM Division is conducting their 11th annual bottom trawl survey of groundfish, May 12-October 18, from Cape Flattery, WA to the U.S.-Mexican border. The survey, which will complete two passes down the coast using two vessels per pass, will document changes in abundance, distribution, and condition of important fish stocks. The survey provides critical information to fisheries managers, fishers, and others. Stocks assessments based on survey data are used by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council to establish fishing quotas and implement sustainable management plans. More...

Center to host ten undergraduate scholars
 Posted: May 28, 2008

This year the NWFSC will host nine Ernest F. Hollings Scholars and one Educational Partnership Program Scholar, comprising over a quarter of the total scholars assigned to NMFS by the NOAA Office of Education in 2008. These diverse undergraduates are among the nation's brightest science and engineering students, and each will participate in an internship at the Montlake laboratory in research areas including groundfish monitoring, aquaculture, and harmful algal blooms.

Center Scientists Train Observers in Ghana
 Posted: May 27, 2008

In April, Center scientist John LaFargue helped NOAA Fisheries develop and conduct the first marine observer training program in Africa. The 40 students and officials participated in the workshop aboard a Navy vessel in Accra, Ghana, where they learned how to identify marine mammals and seabirds that may be caught accidentally in fishing gear, and how to get inside a life raft and abandon ship. In addition to sampling the local cuisine of sun-dried anchovies and grass cutters (the second largest rodent on the continent), LaFargue learned much about the unique challenges of managing Africa's bycatch and universal concerns facing observers worldwide. NOAA Kids' Day
 Posted: April 28, 2008

On April 24, Center staff and scientists hosted the annual NOAA Kids' Day event, which provides hands-on, interactive activities and kid-friendly science talks to enhance understanding of fisheries science and the NWFSC's research. Nearly 40 kids and their families took a tour of a research vessel and participated in science stations to dissect fish, view microscopic organisms, attend a dive gear demonstration, learn about PIT tags, run DNA gels, and tour the hatchery.

NWFSC Goes Green
 Posted: March 13, 2008

This month the Center embarked on a new effort to establish an Environmental Management System at Montlake, with the goal of becoming a more environmentally-responsible facility. The newly-established "Green Team" is spearheading this effort by initiating a staff survey, collecting baseline data of environmental impacts, and launching a new Recycling Action Team.
