Monitor and Observe

NSSL research helps fulfill NOAA's mission goals through development of and testing new weather radar technologies that are essential to providing integrated observations, predictions and warnings of high-impact weather including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.

Understand and Describe

NSSL's research contributes to the development of new techniques to support NWS operational forecasting. Research based on real-time data sets from field observations leads to a better conceptual understanding of severe weather processes which in turn results in improved forecast models and radar products. Better models and radar products will help clarify the uncertainity of events such as floods and flash floods, resulting in short-term forecast and warning improvements and better emergency response management.

Assess and Predict

NSSL hydrometeorology research helps NOAA serve society's needs for weather and water information by developing methods to integrate and use full suites of modern weather observations, sensors, and model output for severe storm monitoring and prediction.

Engage, Advise and Inform

NSSL scientists explore ways to inform, involve and engage weather information customers and decision makers in industry, government, and the public sector.
