Milestone in the MLK/McCallie Conversion Process

May 11, 2001

Citizen group and council members including Uneva Shaw, Highland Park Neighborhood Association, Sarah Morgan Community Impact Fund, City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem, City Councilman Leamon Pierce, Warren Logan, the Urban League, Jack Murrah, the Lyndhurst Foundation, Richard Brown, UTC, Anita Conley, Highland Park Neighborhood Association, and Dr. Bill Stacy, UTC, come to the Mayor’s Office to ask that 2 way conversion of MLK, McCallie and Bailey Avenue be considered.

Fall 2001

City Council authorizes a plan on possible conversion to be completed.

Fall 2001                

Request for Proposals sent to acquire professional firm to conduct conversion feasibility study.

December 3, 2001    

Citizen’s Advisory Group Meeting.

January 10, 2002     

Glatting Jackson retained to conduct feasibility study.

Feb 11-13, 2002      

Public Planning Charrette—Three days of scheduled citizen stakeholder meetings with consultants and city staff.
Open public meeting during the evening.

April 4, 2002           

Scheduled citizen stakeholder meetings with consultants and city staff.
Open public meeting during the evening.

April 16, 2002          

Presentation and comment session at open public meeting of the MPO Executive Board.
Presentation and comment session at an open public meeting of a City Council subcommittee.

May 13, 2002          

Presentation and comment session at open public meeting of the Regional Planning Agency.

May 14, 2002          

Comment session at an open public meeting of the City Council.

November 22, 2002  

City of Chattanooga receives letter from TDOT indicating that MLK Boulevard, McCallie, and Bailey Avenues have been turned over to local control.  In exchange, 23rd Street and portions of Dodds Avenue will become state and federal routes.
