Meeting tonight to develop City-Wide Public Art Plan - Nearly 500 have indicated they will attend event at the Chattanoogan

11/11/2002

Chattanooga, TN—This evening at 5:30 p.m., local residents will gather at the Chattanoogan Conference Center on Broad Street to begin the process of creating Chattanooga’s Public Art Plan.

Sponsored by Mayor Corker’s Office and the Public Art Steering Committee, more than 500 people have indicated that they will be in attendance to discuss the role public art will play in Chattanooga in the future.

For many years Chattanooga has found ways to incorporate public art into its landscape, in public and private buildings and in various public spaces throughout the community.  However, despite great effort, there has never been an overall plan for making a public art as successful as it could be.  Tonight’s public process will be the first step in the development of a master plan which will highlight the importance of art in the community and provide a blueprint to ensure its appropriate placement throughout the city.

The need for a public art plan was fully realized as the 21st Century Waterfront Plan began to take shape.  While the plan will focus on public art throughout the city, a significant initial component will be the waterfront development, slated to be complete by the spring of 2005.

All media are encouraged to cover tonight’s event at the Chattanoogan Conference Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. The public meeting will be conducted in the facility’s Ballroom and is expected to last no more than an hour and a half.  A full fact sheet follows this release.
