(*) Industry shipments: although most factories or establishments make or sell a variety of products, for statistical purposes, individual concerns are classified under the industry of their most prominent product. For instance if 80 percent of a plant's total output consists of surgical equipment and 20 percent consists of laboratory equipment, that plant is classified as a surgical equipment industry plant. The total output of all such "surgical equipment industry" plants makes up the shipments for the industry. This figure will be affected by the minority percentage of equipment not specifically belonging to that industry and therefore is not a completely accurate representation of the actual product being shipped. The hourly wage, employment, and expenditure data in these charts is calculated on an "industry" basis.

(**) Product shipments: the value of all specific industry equipment (i.e., surgical equipment) is added to derive "product shipments." Product shipments can be thought of as the total value of specific products classified within an industry shipped by all establishments regardless of how those establishments are classified.
