St. Louis (July 28) - U.S. Commerce Assistant Secretary William G. Sutton leads the first Sustainable Manufacturing American Regional Tour (SMART) at Sunnen Products Company. “The United States is a global leader in sustainable manufacturing, improving our competitiveness in the global market,” said Sutton. “The SMART project seeks to showcase ways U.S. manufacturers can attract new clients and customers, become good corporate citizens, and boost their bottom lines through sustainable production practices.” (more)

Hosted by Manufacturing & Services, Manufacturing 2040 is a two-day workshop that will bring executives and experts from manufacturing, academia, and government together to map out the future role, importance and competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing and the implications for U.S. policy. This scenario developing exercise is designed to improve the national discussion about a variety of issues important to manufacturing and to facilitate the implementation of policies to improve the U.S. business environment.

Gutierrez Announces Record Tourism in 2007

Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announces an all time record for international tourism.

Washington (March 10)—In remarks to the National League of Cities, Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced that 2007 set an all time record for international tourism, with visitors pumping $122 billion into the U.S. economy from over 56 million international visitors supporting 8.5 million American jobs. "This is yet another record-breaking year for the US travel and tourism industry and another year in which it produced a healthy trade surplus," Gutierrez said.
