NEUTRON REFLECTOMETRY

Geometry of specular reflectivity
rounded box

Reflectometry uses neutrons scattered at grazing angles as as probe of depth-dependent composition and in-plane correlations in flat samples.  By using a spin-polarized beam, neutron reflectivity is sensitive to the magnetic, as well as the nuclear composition of samples.  Examples of materials studied include magnetic nanostructures, biological membranes, and polymer films.  The NCNR has three reflectometers, each specially configured for different types of research.

  1.   NG-1 Polarized Beam Reflectometer (polarized beam capability)

  2.   ANDR / MAGIK (equipped with a 2-dimensional position sensitive detector)

  3.   NG-7 Horizontal Geometry Reflectometer (used for liquid samples)
