Research Associate Appointments at NETL
NETL offers Research Associate appointments to members of the academic community from undergraduates through faculty. At each level of education, NETL hopes to inspire and educate new scientists and engineers about the challenges and opportunities in energy research. Members of the academic community interested in Research Associate appointments should first familiarize themselves with NETL’s research program. We highly recommend that interested parties contact the NETL education coordinator and/or NETL staff to learn more about research opportunities. Appointments are very competitive.

Undergraduate appointments at NETL introduce students to research and encourage them to pursue advanced degrees. Undergraduates should have completed core courses and preferably some course work in their field of interest. 

Graduate level, post-graduate and faculty appointments are intended to allow participants with an established skill set to apply them to energy-related problems. 

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)
The ORISE Program provides opportunities for undergraduate students, recent graduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty researchers. Most ORISE appointments at NETL are made within the Office of Science and Technology.

National Research Council (NRC) Research Associate Programs
Four focus areas guide scientific research at NETL. NRC Opportunities at NETL provide information on specific research opportunities and access to appropriate NRC application forms. NRC and NETL encourage interested candidates to discuss opportunities with prospective research advisors.

Dr. Michael Nowak is the laboratory coordinator for the NRC program at NETL.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship
NETL participates in the Office of Fossil Energy's Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program, which offers summer internship opportunities to minority students. The fellowship provides interns with a professional experience and opportunity for personal growth, while offering an economic incentive to pave the way for hiring and bringing a diverse workforce to government institutions and their support contractors.

This fellowship embodies the positive attributes of the Historically Black Colleges Program, the Universities and Hispanic Internship Program, and the Tribal Colleges and Universities Program.  

Methane Hydrate Research Fellowship
NETL has launched an academic research fellowship program to support qualified students in their pursuit of advanced degrees related to methane hydrate science. The 2-year fellowships will be made available to support work towards M.S. and Ph.D degrees, or in a Post-doctoral appointment. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will administer the program, which will feature a competitive stipend structure, including a $6k annual travel allowance.
