Japan's Hinode spacecraft, launched in 2006 on a mission to study the sun, is beaming back movies that are stunning even seasoned investigators. The movies show a polar crown prominence, a curved wall of 10,000° plasma about 90,000 km long and 30,000 km tall, recorded by Hinode on 30 November 2006. Solar astronomers have seen prominences like this before, but never so clearly. The new view is challenging long-held ideas; in the past, researchers thought of prominences as mainly static structures, held motionless above the surface of the sun by magnetic force fields. Researchers now say those ideas might be too simple. (Image Credit: NASA)
A packing mishap involving space shuttle Atlantis' sensitive cargo to service the Hubble Space Telescope could delay the upcoming mission. Technicians discovered that insulation around new telescope batteries appeared to have come loose and got caught in the plastic bagging that is supposed to protect the cargo from contamination. The container needed to be brought back to the processing area, opened, checked, cleaned and repacked. The whole process will take at least 24 hours and could cause a two day slip in the launch schedule, meaning that Atlantis might not launch until 12 October. (Image Credit: NASA)
The National Aeronautic Association announced that Norman R. Augustine, AIAA Past President and Honorary Fellow, will be the recipient of the 2008 Wright Memorial Trophy. Mr. Augustine will be honored for his “Legendary and inspirational aerospace leadership in both industry and government.” He is a National Medal of Technology recipient and head of numerous vital military programs and blue ribbon panels. The Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to a living American for "significant public service of enduring value to aviation in the United States." AIAA congratulates Mr. Augustine for this special recognition.
Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell on Monday welcomed the attendees of the 26th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, taking place 14-19 September in Anchorage, AK. He spoke during the Opening Session, focusing on local aviation. Lt. Gov. Parnell was elected in 2006 on the theme of "Alaskans Free of Fear - Alaskans with Hope and Opportunity." He previously served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1992 to 1996, and the Alaska State Senate from 1996 to 2000. AIAA is privileged to have added Lt. Gov. Parnell to an already solid ICAS/ATIO program.
