The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, held a dedication ceremony for its new Center for Functional Nanomaterials on Monday, May 21. The laboratory features state-of-the-art equipment to probe, design materials at the nanoscale. Research at the facility is aimed to develop nanoscale materials to help the country achieve energy independence. Basic research will be conducted to study the structure-property relationships in carbon nanotubes, hydrogen storage materials, novel catalysts, and electronic nanomaterials. Nanosctructured materials may enable energy-efficient processes and devices for alternatives to fossil fuels, in the form of efficient catalysts, fuel cells, photovoltaic, or solar cell, elements as well as solid-state lighting.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, it is estimated the facility will be used annually by 300 people representing academia, industry, and national laboratories.
