Louise Gluck explains that she is a lyric poet who loves editing. After discussing writer's block and her early work, she reads in Part I from First Born (1983), The House on Marshland (1975), and Descending Figure (1980). In Part II, she continues with poems from Descending Figure and The Triumph of Achilles (1987). In Part III, Ms. Gluck discusses poems by others that she has "held dear" or that "have taught me - compelled me - made me want to write."
Speaker Biography: Louise Gluck was born April 22, 1943, in New York City and grew up on Long Island. She graduated in 1961 from Hewlett High School, in Hewlett, N.Y., and then attended Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, N.Y., and Columbia University, New York City. Gluck won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1993 for her collection "The Wild Iris." She is also the recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Academy of American Poet?s Prize, as well as numerous Guggenheim fellowships. She lives in Cambridge, Mass., and was previously a Senior Lecturer in English at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. Currently, Gluck is teaching at Yale.
