David Main will become the 11th police chief in the City of Lodi's 101-year history, City Manager Blair King announced today.
Main, a 26-year veteran of the Lodi Police Department, has been a captain since 2002.
 "We conducted a thorough search for a Chief of Police and David was the obvious choice," King said Tuesday. "Not only does he have tremendous professional qualifications, he has the respect of the department as well as the Lodi community."
Main has served as Lodi's interim police chief since the Dec. 22 retirement of Jerry Adams. Main will earn an annual salary of $137,117 once his appointment becomes effective April 17.
"It's an honor and a privilege to be selected," Main said. "It's humbling because I owe a lot to the people with whom I serve."
Main said he has four goals for his department as police chief.
"We want people to feel very safe and secure, we want to maintain the trust and confidence of the community, provide excellent customer service and continue to work on employee development and satisfaction.
"We aren't going to be complacent," he said.
Main was hired as Lodi police officer in 1982, was promoted to sergeant in 1987 and to lieutenant in 1991. Since then, he earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College, completed the FBI's National Academy in 2006, and earned a master's degree in organizational leadership from Chapman University in 2007.
He previously served as a cadet for the Nevada County Sheriff's Department and 17 months as an officer with the Rio Vista Police Department.
Main lives in Lodi with his wife, Roya, and their son, Jack. Main also has an adult son, David Main Jr.
