The Salmonid Restoration Federation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of California's salmon, steelhead and trout populations and their habitat, has scheduled its 26th annual conference at Lodi's Hutchins Street Square.
The conference, from March 5 to March 8, includes two full days of workshops and field tours on fisheries restoration topics, and sessions focusing on environmental, biological, and policy issues that affect salmonid recovery. (Click here for a conference poster)
Other highlights of the conference include the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival from 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m., March 6 (click here for a film festival poster), and a poster session.
This premier restoration conference features all-day field tours of Tuolumne and Stanislaus River restoration and monitoring projects, a Fisheries Monitoring and Management tour of the Mokelumne River, and half-day workshops and tours of fish-friendly vineyards, and the Cosumnes River Preserve. Workshops include Fins and Zins: Sustainable Agriculture and Watershed Management, Fish Passage: Managing Flows on Regulated Rivers and Streams, Floodplain Restoration, and Invasive Species.
The City of Lodi is offering a guided tour of Mokelumne River Watershed Education Murals, the Lodi Lake/Mokelumne River Nature Area and the Woodbridge Irrigations District's (WID) facilities. Four educational murals were funded by a CALFED grant and the City of Lodi. A professional artist teamed up with local primary and high school students to create these murals. The Lodi Lake/Mokelumne River Nature Area is a 58-acre reserve with walking trails. View the new WID dam on the Mokelumne River and new fish passage facilities. The tour will be at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, on the City of Lodi's Trolley Car. Seating limited to about 40 people, registration for the tour is through the conference.
The session's headline speakers are University of California, Davis, fisheries professor Peter Moyle, who will discuss the state of California salmonids and the restoration of the San Joaquin; Christina Swanson, senior scientist of the Bay Institute, who is scheduled to speak on Bay Delta recovery issues; Robert Lackey from the Environmental Protection Agency, who will discuss the Salmon 2100 Project that factors global conditions into long-term projections about salmon recovery around the world; and California Assembly Member Jared Huffman, who will highlight current watershed bills and opportunities in the state legislature.
