The Lodi Planning Commission on Wednesday voted 4-0 to make the preliminary project boundaries of the Lodi Community Improvement Plan identical to the Survey Area chosen by the Lodi City Council a week earlier.
 The 2,400-acre Project Area includes most of Lodi east of Sacramento Street, and the Kettleman Lane and Lodi Avenue commercial corridors west to Ham Lane.
Wednesday's vote put into motion a series of other measures the City must take before Lodi's first redevelopment project can go into effect, such as performing studies, issuing reports, holding public hearings and consultating with public agencies that may be affected by a redevelopment project.
Redevelopment is a way for the city to raise money for community improvements without raising taxes. Out of 163 California cities with a population greater than 50,000, Lodi is one of only eight that do not have active redevelopment agencies.
Properties within the tentative Project Area will be surveyed on a parcel-by-parcel basis to see if they qualify for inclusion in a redevelopment project. The
Lodi Redevelopment Agency passed a resolution recently prohibiting it from using eminent domain to acquire property in the project area.
