President Bush to Recognize Pennsylvania Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Dolly Yunkunis upon arrival in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 22, 2004. Yunkunis, 75, is an active volunteer at the Kingston Senior Center.

President George W. Bush will meet Dolly Yunkunis when he arrives in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 22, 2004. Yunkunis, 75, is an active volunteer at the Kingston Senior Center.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and he created USA Freedom Corps to help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 350 individuals around the country, like Yunkunis, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

A volunteer at the Kingston Senior Center for the past 15 years, Yunkunis spends 20 hours a week helping with food service and planning special events. Yunkunis entertains the seniors as a singer, and has performed in five original variety shows as fundraisers for the center. For the past 15 years, Yunkunis has also been a volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and has worked for a variety of charities including the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. RSVP is part of Senior Corps, a network of national service programs that provides older Americans the opportunity to apply their life experience to meeting community needs.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
