President Bush to Recognize Minnesota Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Ken Porwoll upon arrival in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Saturday, October 9, 2004. Porwoll, 84, is a World War II veteran and an active volunteer with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Minneapolis.

President George W. Bush will meet Ken Porwoll when he arrives in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Saturday, October 9, 2004. Porwoll, 84, is a World War II veteran and an active volunteer with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Minneapolis.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Porwoll, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Porwoll has volunteered over 4,300 hours in 18 years of service at the VAMC, assisting with research in the medical library and working in the lending library. Porwoll also volunteers one day each week at St. Paul Listening House where he is a barber for transients and the homeless. In addition, Porwoll serves meals once a month at Loaves & Fishes, a shelter in St. Paul catering to the needs of the homeless.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
