President George W. Bush will meet Robert Eastman when he arrives in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday, October 6, 2004. Eastman, 69, is an active volunteer with the Senior Adults Giving to Education (S.A.G.E.) program in Farmington Hills.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Eastman, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Eastman has volunteered with the S.A.G.E. program for the past 14 years. As a volunteer, he visits Lanigan Elementary School in Farmington Hills once a week to teach classes to fifth-graders. He also arranges for guest speakers to address topics relevant to the fifth grade curriculum. Through this program, Eastman helps children focus on lifelong lessons such as goal-setting, overcoming adversity, creative thinking, and problem-solving. In addition, Eastman is the accountant for Farmington Hill’s Senior Center gift shop.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
