President Bush to Recognize Parkersburg Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Roy Boso upon arrival in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on Sunday, September 5, 2004.  Boso, 75, is an active volunteer with the Lubeck Volunteer Fire Department.

President George W. Bush will meet Roy Boso when he arrives in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on Sunday, September 5, 2004. Boso, 75, is an active volunteer with the Lubeck Volunteer Fire Department.

President Bush hascalled on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Boso, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Boso is a charter member of the Lubeck Volunteer Fire Department which was established in Parkersburg in 1960. During his 44 years with the department, he has participated in firefighting, vehicle and aircraft rescue, and search and rescue efforts. Boso remains on-call every day for the volunteer fire department, and once a week, he assists with training classes for new volunteers and continuing education classes for veteran volunteers. Boso also visits local elementary schools to help with Smokey the Bear fire prevention classes. In addition, Boso is a Red Cross volunteer and has helped with rescue efforts throughout West Virginia.
